Pre Primary (2-3 years old)

Welcome to our Pre Primary (2-3 years old) Classroom

Our pre-primary classroom is a multi-age classroom which includes children who are 2 to 3 years of age. The environment is carefully prepared so that it is welcoming, engaging, and inviting. This prepared environment helps guide children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. At this stage children are beginning their journey into more structured academic activities balanced with hands on learning that promotes exploration and discovery. Within our primary classroom, children can be found working in six major areas of Montessori curriculum: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, Science and Culture Character development including grace and courtesies, physical movement, drama, music, art, and world languages are also included in the vast array of activities that ate introduced.

Practical Life:
Practical Life activities in the pre-primary classroom include daily living skills that are designed to promote a sense of accomplishment, independence, fine motor skills, and concentration. Some activities included in the practical life curriculum include pouring and transferring, scooping, washing, and cleaning, dressing skills, flower arranging, and folding.

Sensorial:
Sensorial activities in the pre-primary classroom revolve around the student’s 5 senses. The materials are beautiful and inviting and children are drawn to explore colors, shapes, textures, sizes, sounds, and much more. These explorations enhance vocabulary development and help build a strong foundation for foundational concepts in math and language.

Mathematics
Mathematics concepts are taught using hands-on, concrete materials. The inviting and stimulating materials encourage exploration and repetition. Children begin learning concepts related to numbers, quantity, and operations.

Language
Language activities in the pre-primary are meant as foundational skills for oral language, pre-reading, and writing. As in with every area in the Montessori pre-primary classroom, materials are hands-on, concrete, and engaging. Some language activities that are introduced in the pre-primary classroom include object matching, object/ picture matching, nomenclature cards, 3-period vocabulary lessons, rhyming activities, sequencing, tracing metal insets, and sandpaper letters.

Science
In the preprimary classroom, children are introduced to many various scientific concepts on a rotating basis within the curriculum. Children explore themes including botany, zoology, anatomy, and earth and space science. Engaging experiments and interesting hands on materials help children develop a sense of wonder and a love for learning.

Culture
In the pre-primary classroom children begin learning about the world around them. This starts with their families, moves into the local community, and then into the larger world around them. Children explore concepts such as community helpers, the sandpaper globe, land and water forms, and people, animals, and cultures from around the world.
