Middle School (5th-8th grade)

Welcome To Our Middle School Classrooms

Our middle school class creates an educational setting where students focus on more advanced academic studies and materials more geared toward their developmental level. The purpose of the middle school class is to prepare our students for high school by developing the academic, personal, and social skills they will need to be successful at the next level. The classroom setting will consist of traditional, experiential, and multimedia approaches to learning. Students will be expected to strive for excellence in both academic and social endeavors. Students are encouraged to play a large role in their own education and will have the opportunity to select projects and activities designed to develop a love of learning.

The actual educational lessons and activities, themselves, will be thematically based on Montessori approaches keying in on aspects including Practical life (experiential), Gross and Fine Motor Skill Development, Kinesthetic Awareness, Artistic Expression, Technology Skills, and Sensorial/Cognitive Development. These aspects will be used to augment even the more traditional areas of study such as math, literature/ reading, language mechanics, language expansion (vocabulary or word use), science, and civics (social studies). During written expression, students will learn how to prepare papers from rough draft to final paper. They will use the Six Plus One writing traits to develop their overall writing. Grading for writing will be based on two primary factors: evaluation based on the writing traits and timed writing tests. Students will be permitted to do most of their writing assignments on computers if they wish.
In science, we incorporate interactive notebooks and hands on activities to develop a real world understanding of concepts in addition to a traditional academic approach.

In social studies/history we will not be using textbooks. Instead, we will be using comprehensive videos, interactive smart board lessons, note outlines, and other multi-media sources to present and process the material.
For the Math portion of our curriculum, we will be using the Saxon math curriculum.
As with the other grade levels, IXL will be used to individually supplement each student’s academic progress. It is an on-line subscription that provides each student with individual assessments and material specific to their own learning level.
